Building Inclusive Playgrounds and Stronger Schools Across Livingston Parish

In Livingston Parish, learning does not stop at the classroom door. For many children, some of the most meaningful growth happens on the playground—where social skills are built, confidence is strengthened, and inclusion becomes a lived experience rather than a lesson. Recognizing the essential role of play in childhood development, the Pilot Club of Denham Springs has undertaken one of the most ambitious school-focused initiatives currently underway in the parish: a long-term plan to bring inclusive, accessible playgrounds to every elementary school in Livingston Parish.

In 2023, the Pilot Club learned that playground equipment is not funded by the Livingston Parish School Board, leaving many campuses with little to no equipment—especially for students with disabilities. This gap presented a significant barrier for children who benefit most from inclusive play opportunities. With accessibility equipment and proper safety surfacing carrying substantial costs, the club committed to a bold solution rather than a temporary fix.

That commitment became a five- to ten-year parishwide initiative targeting two elementary schools per year, with a projected investment of at least $50,000 per campus. Since the project’s launch, accessible playgrounds have been completed at Holden School, Seventh Ward Elementary, Maurepas School, South Live Oak Elementary, and Springfield Elementary. Each installation represents more than new equipment; it reflects a belief that all children deserve equal access to play, movement, and social connection during the school day. Fundraising is currently underway for the next playground at Levi Milton Elementary School in Walker, with plans to continue until every elementary school in the district is served.

The scale of these projects cannot be understated. Inclusive playgrounds often range in cost from $50,000 to well over $100,000, depending on size and equipment needs. The Pilot Club funds this work through a combination of community support, private and corporate donations, school fundraisers, and its signature annual event, the Southern Charm Gala. Additional support has come through matching grants awarded by the Pilot International Foundation, allowing the club to expand the reach and impact of each dollar raised.

While the playground initiative stands as a cornerstone project, it is only one part of the Pilot Club’s broader educational mission. Chartered in 1965, the Pilot Club of Denham Springs is part of Pilot International, a volunteer service organization dedicated to developing youth, promoting brain safety and health, and supporting caregivers. Locally, the club’s projects touch students and families throughout Livingston Parish through school supply distributions, hygiene kits, youth education programs, scholarships, and service opportunities that reinforce civic responsibility from an early age.

One of the organization’s most direct connections to local students is its long-standing sponsorship of Anchor Club at Denham Springs High School, a youth service organization focused on leadership and community involvement. As a former Anchor Club member throughout high school, I saw firsthand how early exposure to service work shapes students into engaged, compassionate adults. Programs like Anchor Club not only support schools—they cultivate the next generation of community leaders.

With nearly 40 members from across the parish, the Pilot Club of Denham Springs continues to demonstrate how civic organizations can directly strengthen educational environments beyond academics. Through inclusive playgrounds, youth leadership development, and sustained investment in local schools, the club’s work reinforces a simple but powerful lesson: when communities prioritize access, dignity, and opportunity, students thrive.

The Pilot Club of Denham Springs is currently welcoming new members who are interested in service, education, and making a lasting impact in Livingston Parish. More information about the organization, its projects, and upcoming fundraisers can be found through its website and social media platforms.
